CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Dog owners and law enforcement officers from around the country are reporting pets stolen, only to find them for sale on the internet.

Not all of the pets are found and returned, some are never recovered. It is called pet-flipping.

In South Carolina, one man had three dogs stolen from him. Police say he turned to craigslist for help and found a picture of his pet online. The man set up a meeting with the seller and bought his own dog back.

Kelly Goff with the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri said one way to prevent pet-flipping is to put a microchip your pet.

If you are looking at a dog online, for example, Goff said you could tell the person you would like to take it to a vet to have it checked out. While at the vet, they could check and see if the dog has a microchip.

"It's as a pet owner and a pet lover its my worst nightmare," Goff said. "Personally, my pets aren't allowed outside because it takes seconds for someone to reach over the gate."

Reports indicate that pet-flipping has happened in both Kansas City and St. Louis.
