Man arrested after shooting in Carbondale

A Murphysboro man faces charges after a shooting in Carbondale left a person in critical condition.

Ronald E. Sanders Jr., 23, of Murphysboro is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Sanders was arrested in Marion the day after the shooting in the 400 block of East Jackson in Carbondale around 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

According to the Carbondale Police Department, officers responded to a shots fired call on the 400 block of E. Jackson Street around 9 o'clock Wednesday night.  When officers arrived they found a gunshot victim.

The Jackson County Ambulance service transported the victim to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale initially for treatment of a life threatening injury. The victim was then transferred to a St. Louis area hospital, and was listed in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

The exact nature of the events, before and after the shooting, is under investigation.

The identity of the victim has not been released. 

Sanders is being held in the Jackson County Jail on $100,000 bail. He has to come up with $10,000 cash to bond out of jail.

The Investigations Bureau of the Carbondale Police Department is leading the investigation.

A crime scene investigation at the scene of the incident was conducted by the Forensic Science Services Section of the police department.

Assistance at the scene was provided by officers of the Illinois State Police, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Southern Illinois University Police Department.

The investigation into this incident is continuing.
