Friday kicks off sales tax holiday in MO, TN

(KFVS) -

The Missouri and Tennessee sales tax holiday kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday (August 1-3).

In Missouri, parents and caregivers can get a break by not paying sales tax on most items of clothing up to $100, school supplies up to $50 per purchase, computer software worth less than $350, and personal computers and computer peripheral devices worth less than $3,500. In Tennessee, the tax holiday applies to clothing less than $100, school supplies less than $100, and computers worth less than $1,500.

The sales tax holiday is not only meant to give moms and dads a break, but also to help keep Missouri shoppers spending money at Missouri stores.

Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder says a majority of Missouri's population lives near a state border and the sales tax break is an incentive for shoppers to stay close to home as well as attract shoppers from neighboring states.

Many local governments also suspend local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday, but some do not.

This is a list of the Missouri counties that will not participate in the 2014 sales tax holiday. City sales tax in these locations will still be collected on the sale of qualifying holiday items. View the full list.
