MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A high school football coach took matters into his own hands to catch a thief. Authorities said the crook who stole from the team knew pretty well where to look for the loot.

Coming off the best season in school history, the Siegel Stars know they will have a target on their chest this year, with teams looking for revenge. But coaches never expect one of their own would target them.

"We kind of had a suspicion of who it might have been," said Greg Wyant, Siegel head football coach.

Wyant said he noticed things were coming up missing from his desk, and inside the field house.

"It wasn't anything major stolen. It was just some little things," Wyant said. "We weren't going to stand around and let someone come in freely."

The coaches decided to do a little detective work of their own.

"We decided to put up a surveillance camera," the coach said. "Within 30 minutes of having the surveillance system put in, we caught the former player, who had been getting into our field house."

An assistant coach chased after the former player, who took off running, and police later arrested him.

The coach said the 15-year-old was kicked off the team for attendance at practice. Soon after he noticed a set of keys missing, and items from the field house started to disappear.

Coach Wyant is using burglary by the teenager as a lesson for his other players.

"We try to relay to our kids that there are consequences to every action, and sometimes the consequences are not so good," he said.

He's just ready to put all this behind him, and get back to football.

"We're just trying to move on from this and focusing on our season this year," Wyant said.

The former player is facing burglary charges. He appeared in Rutherford County Juvenile Court last Friday.
