CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Back-to-school is just around the corner and parents are busy shopping for back-to-school clothes. For many, that means buying school uniforms.

The assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Cape Girardeau schools says this is the district’s second year to enforce a school uniform policy.

“What we were trying to do was take the focus off ‘what is everyone wearing?’”Dr. Sherry Copeland said, “So, now we have given the kids the opportunity to focus on what’s really important and that’s education.”

Every school’s dress code is slightly different, so it’s important that parents know what their child’s school requires. Some Heartland schools require polo shirts with an embroidered school logo. However, other schools such as Cape Girardeau, require that the polo shirts are a plain, solid color. Some schools allow t-shirts, but only if they have the school’s name or mascot. Some dress codes are stricter than others.

“We do allow jeans in our dress code as long as they are meet the standards of our dress code,” Copeland said. “The skirts have to be a certain length. They have to be two inches above the knee, no shorter.”

The good news for parents is that buying these uniforms isn’t too expensive.

“These (polo shirts) are $5.97 and the long sleeved are $6.97 so you can get a shirt for 6 bucks,” Brooke Hayden, a Wal-Mart Assistant Manager, said.

Here are links to several Heartland Schools’ dress code guidelines or student handbooks.
