Holbrook raising money to rename children's cancer wing after Bayler Teal

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

The phrase "win anyway" have defined University of South Carolina baseball for many seasons. Of course, that's just about a game played on a diamond.

Those words now inspire children to beat cancer through Gamecocks head baseball coach Chad Holbrook's Win Anyway Foundation.

The foundation, which is in its second year of existence, helps raise money to help families with children battling cancer and other diseases.

But what Holbrook would really like to do is honor Gamecocks baseball fan, Bayler Teal, by donating enough money to Palmetto Children's Hospital to name the pediatric oncology wing after the young boy who died just days before the Gamecocks won their first baseball national championship in 2010.

"I want Bayler's legacy to live on," said Holbrook. "I'm convinced as I sit here, and I know Coach [Ray] Tanner is the same way, that we don't win the 2010 national championship without Bayler Teal. I mean that from the bottom of my heart."

"He had a way of making our kids at the most nervous time of our season, Bayler put everything into perspective, and Bayler had a way of making our kids relax and play. I'm convinced of it. I know for a fact we don't win the national championship without Bayler Teal."

The foundation holds its 7th Annual Reece Holbrook Golf Classic and Sports Auction Aug. 18 and 19.

Reece is Holbrook's son, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2004 at 2 years old. He beat the disease after 3 1/2 years of treatment.

That experience lead Holbrook, a former Tarheels baseball coach, to team up with UNC head basketball coach Roy Williams to create this event that's raised over $1 million.

The sports auction will be held on the 18th. Items such as a Jackie Bradley, Jr. signed bat, a Derek Jeter signed jersey, and other types of memorabilia will be available.

Keynote speakers will be USC head coach Frank Martin and former Gamecocks baseball player Landon Powell, who recently lost his baby girl Izzy to a rare autoimmune disease.

With offenses becoming increasingly explosive, plugging the holes is more imperative than ever. It's no surprise Alabama and Florida top the list, but the rest of the rankings may surprise you.
