NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

After 45 years on the job, the right-hand man for six Nashville mayors has announced his retirement from public service. Interim fire chief Billy Lynch said Tuesday he is stepping down.

Lynch, who has been a Metro employee since 1968, has served as the interim fire chief since Steve Halford's retirement in May 2012.

"He may not receive the public recognition or fame, but for nearly five decades, as a true public servant, Billy has made the life of Nashvillians better through his dedication and hard work," said Mayor Karl Dean.

Lynch became the man Nashville mayors had on speed dial when a problem arose. Over the years, he has taken charge in a pinch involving public works, the fire department and even the cleanup after the Flood of 2010.

Lynch leaves the Nashville Fire Department in two weeks, and taking over will be Rick White, a 35-year veteran and a Glencliff High School graduate.

But Lynch isn't completely finished with his work in the mayor's office. He plans to stick around for some part-time opportunities as a special assistant to Mayor Dean.
