CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Basketball, Student Council, Football, Choir; they’re all ways for kids to get involved at school.

"Well I am the BETA club president here, and the FBLA president here, and I was class president the past two years," said Ridge Hester.

Hester is a junior at Poplar Bluff High School. Hester is also in the Spanish Club and FTA. He said he gets involved to boost his resume for college.

"It's kind of hard to list to be honest, there's a lot. I am regional president of FCCLA, love my council, I'm regional president of FTA, FBLA, NHS, art club, pep club,” said Rebecca Burger.

Burger started her first day of senior year at Scott City High School Wednesday. She’s also on yearbook, she’s a class officer, plays softball and volleyball and has a part time job.

Burger grew up on a farm and said that mentality has spilled into her school life.

"You need to do something at every moment of the day, you need to be working, doing something, that will better yourself, better people around you," Burger said.

"We encourage our kids to be involved in co-curricular activities," said Mike Cowan.

Principal Cowan at Cape Central High School said being involved is important for teens. But, is there such a thing as too involved?

"I think there's a real possibility there that that they can simply overload themselves," said Cowan.

Cowan said he worries kids can’t focus on any one activity if they’re involved in too many activities.

So how do these kids do it?

"You have to make time for sleep," said Burger.

"You have to prioritize, and you have to be very organized,” said Hester.

"I love it, every minute of everyday I'm doing something, I'm making something of myself, and doing better for people around me," said Burger.
