Board discusses cuts at Pemiscot Memorial Hospital

The Pemiscot Memorial Hospital Board talked about furloughs, laying people off and didn't rule out the worst option of closing the hospital if something wasn't done during Thursday night's meeting.

Employees didn't take the news well but say they know changes need to take place in order to get them back to where they need to be.

The board informed the employees that they owe about $4 million in bills and expenses, money they say they don't have right now.

They told the employees tough decisions would have to be made in order to keep a hospital open in Hayti. Employees and board members agree on one thing. They are going to do everything they can to make sure these doors stay open.

"It will be devastating if these doors close," employee Gwen Farr said. "We are biggest employer in Pemiscot County so that is going to affect all the other ones. It is going to affect the entire Pemiscot County."

Employees say they will be work at work tomorrow because they know the patients will be there waiting for them. That remains their number one priority right now.
