CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Casting directors looked for background extras to be used in a 20th Century Fox movie shooting in Cape Girardeau during a casting call Saturday.

Dr. James Dufek, professor with the Department of Mass Media at Southeast Missouri State, said the directors hope to cast as many people as possible from the Heartland. He said most roles will be background extras.

“It’s a very important part of the film because it gives it a full environment, but there’s no speaking parts, no bit parts, it’s just a matter of a background,” Dufek said.

However, locals will likely fill some small speaking roles, too.

“There are three females with certain personalities that meet up with one of the main characters and she’s looking to find those individuals here in this area because she wants that flavor of this community,” Dufek said.

Some people who were auditioning say they were nervous, but others were enjoying the experience.

“We are waiting in line to see if we can be auditioned to be extras in the movie ‘Gone Girl.’ It doesn’t happen every day, so I thought it’d be a good experience,” Breanna Stone said.

“I’m more excited than nervous,” Leah Ballin said. “I just want to do my best and see what happens.”

The casting call lasted from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Dufek said the level of excitement in the room was more than he’d expected.

“The crowd really does, represent how important the community gets behind events like this and to have this many people show up to get involved, it just shows that we have a lot of community support. And the casting directors are extremely impressed with what they’ve seen so far,” Dufek said.
