Residents call 911 over cable outage

FAIRFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Over the weekend, Fairfield police received numerous 911 calls with callers complaining because of a cable outage in the area and in response, police posted on its Facebook page that the use of 911 is not meant for non-emergency calls.

Police said the emergency calls were regarding a Cablevision television, phone and Internet service outage. Police added that a power outage does not qualify as an emergency.

"When you are in trouble that is the line you want clear," said Fairfield Police Lt. James Perez.

According to Fairfield police, they are unsure the exact number of 911 calls they have received because of the service outage. However, they told Eyewitness News that it was "quite a few."

Police said people, who misuse the 911 system, can be arrested. However, the Fairfield Police Department is not pursuing any arrests in this incident.

Officials with Cablevision said they experienced widespread cable, phone and Internet outages throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties over the weekend.

According to officials with Cablevision Optimum cable, service was restored in about four hours, but they did not state what the problem was.

Residents, who experience power outages in the future, are being told to contact their cable or Internet provide and not the police.

Police also made sure callers use 203-254-4800 phone number when calling about an non-emergency.
