Tropical Storm Unala formed far southwest of Hawaii, becoming the second tropical cyclone in the Central Pacific with a Hawaiian name.
At 11 p.m. Sunday, forecasters at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said Unala was about 750 miles south of Midway island, or 1,350 miles west of Lihue. It was moving west at 20 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.
Forecasters said Unala will cross the International Date Line early Monday morning and will approach Typhoon Pewa in the northwest Pacific. It's expected that Pewa, the stronger of the two storms, will dominate, causing Unala to weaken to a tropical depression by midday Monday. It is forecast to dissipate within 24 hours.
It will have no effect on Hawaii weather.
The next forecast advisories for Unala will be issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency's Regional Specialized Meteorological Center in Tokyo.
