SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The gun used in a 2012 double homicide in Boston allegedly linked to former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez was found in Springfield.

It's a story CBS 3 Springfield was first to break.

Jailene Diaz-Ramos, 19, was arrested back on June 21 after state police found a gun in her car.

Our state police sources in Springfield say that was the same gun used to kill two men in July of last year - a shooting that police are still investigating and believe Hernandez could be tied to.

Diaz-Ramos of Bristol, CT was arrested by state police after crashing her car on I-91 near the Longmeadow exit in June.

Diaz-Ramos was taken to Baystate where she was treated and released.

But when state police troopers inventoried her car, they found a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver.

Court documents reveal it was in the trunk tucked away in a black suitcase along with three rounds of ammunition.

State police sources here in Springfield tell CBS 3 that gun was sent for ballistics testing and just a couple weeks later matched positively with bullets found at the scene of a double homicide in South Boston.

Hernandez is now being investigated for a potential link to that crime. Authorities believe an SUV towed from his uncle's home was used in that killing.

During booking, Diaz-Ramos told police the gun belonged to a friend she would only refer to as "Chicago". She said she gave her friends a ride to work and that they are football players.

Court documents reveal that state police also found a locked safe in the trunk and are awaiting a warrant to search it.

Diaz-Ramos was charged with firearms violations and released on $1,000 bail.

Meantime, Hernandez is being held without the right to bail as he faces first-degree murder charges for the death of Odin Lloyd.

CBS 3 went to the Bristol, CT address listed on her court documents, but her mother said she is estranged from the family and doesn't know how she could be connected to the Boston murders.

Diaz-Ramos has a criminal record. Plainville police say they arrested her for trying to pass a fake $50 bill to a food delivery man. And New Britain says she has another state police arrest on her record for assault and disorderly conduct.

She graduated from Bristol Eastern High School in 2011 - four years after Aaron Hernandez led the football team at Bristol Central.

She is due back in court on Oct. 25.
