11 homeless after Springfield house fire

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Eleven people are homeless Monday night after heavy flames engulfed a multi-family home in Springfield.

It happened just after 6 p.m. on Wilbraham Road.

When firefighters responded they found the home already overcome by flames.

A 4-month-old baby had to be taken to the hospital after the fire as a precaution.

Fire officials say one man on the second floor was also rushed to the hospital because of the heavy smoke.

"We had one man from the second floor taken to Baystate Medical Center with smoke inhalation. He was carried out by the rescue squad," said Executive Aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner, Dennis Leger.

There is no word on the extent of his injuries at this time.

The Arson and bomb squad investigated but so far fire officials do not believe it is suspicious.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families.
