CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Following a 10-month nationwide search, Cape Girardeau city leaders selected a new police chief.

Chief Wes Blair has been on the job for three weeks.

"When we looked at this, my family and I made the decision that if we were going to move from Texas and made a big jump like that it is not going to be something short term," Chief Blair said. "It is going to be something that is life change for us and a place we want to make our life at."

Chief Blair said family above anything else is the most important thing to him.

"I think I am the most proud of is being a dad," Blair said. "I have a nine-year-old who we just enrolled in school here this last week and at the end of the day if there is anything I can hang my hat on being proud of is being his father."

From the job side of things, Blair said he won't be making drastic changes to the department. He does plan using social media more to better connect with the community.

"I think is incumbent on us to stay on the cutting edge of social media as it continues to evolve," he said.

The chief said his message to the community and to his officers is very straight forward.

"I'm not going to come in the morning and change everything overnight," Blair said. "I'm going to maybe tweak a thing here or there as we go forward but the biggest thing we are going to do is keep serving the community and engaging the community."
