Supporters renew push to dig up Herrin cemetery

Posted: Updated:

Supporters in Herrin renew a legal push to dig up portions of a cemetery in hopes of finding the remains of people who died in the 1922 Herrin Massacre.

A group of attorneys asked a Williamson County judge to allow archaeological work at the Herrin cemetery.

Just last month, the city aldermen agreed to ask a judge to lift an 18-month-old ban on the research.

Dozens of replacement workers were killed during a union strike known as the Herrin Massacre.

One researcher believes modern burials have taken place on top of the remains of those killed.
