MARION, IL (KFVS) -

A Marion, Illinois man is facing charges in connection to a 23-month-old's death.

Investigators say shortly after 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, the Marion Police Department got a call from Heartland Regional Medical Center saying a 23-month-old male was brought to the emergency room unresponsive with possible head injuries.

Police say the 23-month-old was immediately flown to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. He was pronounced dead at Cardinal Glennon shortly before 10:45 p.m. on Tuesday, August 20. Authorities say the official autopsy results are pending.

The Marion Police Department started an investigation with the assistance of the Southern Illinois Child Death Investigation Task force, including investigators with the Illinois State Police, Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

They learned the incident happened in the 200 block of North Vicksburg Street in Marion.

Police say several people were interviewed which led to Kody S. Johnson, 25, of Marion, Illinois. Johnson was charged with first-degree murder and was taken to Williamson County Jail with bond set at $1 million.

Police say Johnson was the boyfriend of the 23-month-old's mother.
