PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

A Paducah teen is accused of running down a doctor who was riding a bicycle in Noble Park on August 18.

William T. Hayes Jr., 18, of Paducah, faces charges of first-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident.

William J. Pitman, 55, of Paducah told police he was riding his bicycle and was hit by from behind by an unknown vehicle on Aug. 18. Pitman was taken to Baptist Health Paducah for treatment.

Police say Hayes came to the police department Saturday morning wanting to clear his name. He said Hayes told police officers he was a passenger in the car that had hit Pitman, and gave officers vehicle information and the names of other people who were in the car.

That information was passed along to detectives who found the red, 1996 Dodge Avenger on Kimberly Drive in the Lone Oak area.

A detective spoke with the owner of the vehicle, and learned that Hayes had been driving the vehicle around the time of the crash.

Detectives interviewed a number of people and determined Hayes was driving the vehicle when it hit Pitman. and was possibly was under the influence of drugs.

Around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Hayes was re-interviewed and admitted he was driving the vehicle when it hit Pitman, investigators said.

According to Paducah police, Hayes admitted that he had smoked marijuana and taken prescription medication just prior to the accident.

Hayes was taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.

An arrest citation says that, at the time of the hit and run, Hayes was out of jail on bond for a separate felony offense.
