FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Imagine looking into your backyard pond to find an alligator nearly 12 feet long!

A Florence County man was in that situation just this week, but the scaly creature that made itself at home in the same area where his grandchildren played was refusing to leave.

That's why he called Dennis Matherly with Pee Dee Wildlife Control, Inc. Mr. Matherly has been licensed by the State of South Carolina as an Alligator Control agent since 1988.

When he got the call on Tuesday, Matherly used a permit issued by the SC Department of Natural Resources and his company was able to remove the gator from the pond off Old River Road.

Since Matherly's business also involves a processing plant for hide and meat.

He says statewide, government licensed businesses like his own only catch about two dozen alligators each year in this size range, but "I wouldn't call it huge. They get huger than that," he said.
