LUDLOW, MA (WSHM) -

According to the motorist group, AAA, this weekend will have the most Labor Day travelers since the beginning of the recession.

It was smooth sailing along the Massachusetts Turnpike this afternoon for start of the holiday weekend travel.

"No delays, no tie-ups, no anything. It's been straight traveling. It's really been good," said Gloria Whorton, of Auburn, Mass.

"There's a lot of traffic, but it's moving" said Judy Greenecorvee of Northampton, Mass.

The 2013 AAA Labor Day travel forecast predicts 34 million Americans will travel this holiday weekend.

That's up 4.2 percent from last year.

According to the report, the average Labor Day traveler will go nearly 600 miles round trip and spend roughly $804.

AAA said the spike in travelers may be do to the rise in economy, and that the holiday falls earlier this year.

Also up this weekend is gas prices.

Drivers can expect to pay 2 cents more for a gallon of regular gas.

And a potential U.S. interference with the conflict in Syria, there are risks for higher gasoline prices ahead.

A strike on Syria could boost gas prices in the short term here in the U.S.

Officials are advising drivers to fill up their tanks all the way before heading home on Monday.

Kevin Huntington is traveling to Maine. He said he'll take that advice.

"Yeah, I will fill up before I leave. And usually once I hit the pike I fill up again, but maybe I'll get off before I get on the Pike because everyone will be filling up at the same time," said Huntington.

But for other drivers, they said whether gas prices rise or not, their travels will still continue.

"No, not really. They fluctuate on and off. One day they're 20 cents more or 10 cents. It doesn't really effect it that much," said Mark Sovano, of Hudson, Mass.

"If you have to gas up, you have to gas up, no matter what the price," said Whorton.
