CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A credit score can be important when getting a loan, a car or a home.

But it can also be difficult to build credit if you aren't already making payments on one of those items.

More than 50 million Americans don't have a credit history, making it difficult to qualify for a loan or credit card.

Now, a group in Congress is pushing to apply payments like rent or utilities to your credit report, hopefully making it easier to build credit.

For many young people, especially starting out, they can have trouble establishing credit.

But if this proposal goes through, payments for gas, electricity, and telephone services could help build credit as long as they're on time.

Brandi Bien is a college student at Southeast Missouri. She feels like she pays a lot of bills, but doesn't have anything to show for it.

"I feel like I'm going to graduate college and want to buy a house, or buy a new car when I graduate and I'm not going to be able to, and I am financially responsible, but that's not on any record anywhere," Bien said.

Lawmakers introduced the legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, and assigned it to a committee, but it hasn't gone further than that yet.

If you want to know where you stand, you're entitled to one free credit report each year from the three credit bureaus.
