CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

For the ninth year in a row, fall enrollment is down at Southern Illinois University.

It's a trend nationwide at larger schools. But the opposite is true for smaller community colleges like John A. Logan.

Leaders at John A. Logan College say they don't have a problem keeping students, every year over the last three years, their enrollment numbers go up, this year included.

Just finding the time to fit class in her busy schedule was one of the challenges Katie Reed faced when applying for schools.

"My husband works full time so I can go to school and when I get my degree he is going to go to school," Reed said.

But she said John A. Logan fit the bill when it came to their online classes and flexible hours.

A perk she couldn't find at the larger universities.

"I basically just schedule my work around his because he has a set schedule, I know it's a lot harder for people who don't have set schedules," she said.

Not only that, she said it's cheaper, one-third of the cost of some universities.

"Everything is very organized here; I can never find anything at universities," Reed said.

John A. Logan in Carterville started the fall semester for the third year in a row with enrollment numbers up from the year before.

"We are very pleased with that," said campus correspondent Steve O'Keefe.

He said the numbers don't lie and that there is no better time to get be enrolled at a community college.

"We are very flexible in our schedules. We try to do things in the evening, we try to do things online, we try to run things at different times throughout the year so folks have an opportunity to finish a degree with those tough schedules," he said.

This has proved successful with retention rates also on the rise.

I'm very happy I chose to go to John A. Logan," Reed said.
