NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The search continues for a driver who struck a woman as she rode her bicycle on a downtown Nashville bridge and then drove away.

Molly Meinbresse was biking across the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge after midnight Aug. 4 when a car hit her from behind, sending her 50 feet through the air and causing serious injuries.

In the weeks since, Meinbresse has been receiving treatment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital, and now a task as simple as walking down the hall has become a major struggle for the avid cyclist.

Now, she is partially blind, has a traumatic brain injury and a host of steel rods are holding her body together.

"I have four pins drilled through these two fingers. This will come off tomorrow, and I'll start being able to use my hand. I'm very excited about that," Meinbresse said.

Meinbresse doesn't remember any of the collision, and that's a good thing. She was so badly injured, her friends and family weren't sure she'd survive.

"I have five titanium plates around my eye. I had a skull fracture. You can see the scarring of where they had to open my skull," she said.

Police only have a general description of the car that struck her, and so far, only one witness. Without any new information, whoever did it will almost surely get away with it.

"I think that person is going to have to come forward on their own. I don't think the description of their car is enough for us to find them," Meinbresse said.

The Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge doesn't have a bike lane. If anything, that's what Meinbresse said she hopes will come out of this ordeal: more accessible roads for bikers and more awareness on the part of drivers.

"People do not like cyclists on the road. They're in their way. I think we need to change the way people perceive cyclists," she said.

But, believe it or not, Meinbresse isn't bitter. She can't afford to be.

"There are so many injuries to my body and so much trauma that I need to focus on recovering and getting better, and to put all of that negative energy into something like that is not productive," she said.

The car that struck Meinbresse has been described as an older model silver Acura sedan. Police say it's likely the car that has damage to the front end or the front passenger side.

If you know anything that could help the investigation, call Metro police.
