NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An 11-year-old West Nashville girl is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull on the way to the bus stop Friday.

"As a mother, I just don't know what I could've done if I got the worst news of them all, if a dog had gotten ahold of my daughter and done something far worse than what it was," said the girl's mother, Eunice Nwanr.

Nwanr said daughter Sylvie Kendi was walking to her bus stop on Charlotte Pike when the dog emerged from the Watts Avenue Auto Repair shop, chased Sylvie until she fell and bit her. Advance Auto employee Brandon Springs came running, pulling the dog from Sylvie.

"She was crying," said Nwanr. "She was crying and hyperventilating on the phone. She had two visible bite marks on her right side just below her elbow. Of course, the skin was torn. She was bleeding. She was actively bleeding when I got there."

Sylvie was given a tetanus shot and some antibiotics. Being one tough kid, Nwanr said her daughter asked to go to school.

"I tried to talk her into resting, but she would not hear any of that," said Nwanr. "Somehow she's able to get through stuff."

Police surrounded the dog with guns drawn in a four-hour standoff. Police said they never fired for fear of a stray bullet hitting a nearby apartment complex.

Animal control officials said the dog will be euthanized in 10 days, though they don't plan to cite the owners since they gave up the dog.

"I believe the owner of the garage should be held accountable for this," said Nwanr. "It's an animal. The owner is still responsible for it."

The owner of the dog declined to comment. Animal control officials said remaining dogs on the same property have their shots, tags, and shelter, and they can't do anything more.
