Problems addressed in SIU State of the University address

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Low enrollment numbers, budget issues and pension shortfalls. Chancellor Rita Cheng addressed it all in her fourth state of the university address Monday afternoon.

One of the key issues the university is facing is the cost of college and getting students to learn how to manage money so that they can stay in school.

The chancellor says they will provide more four year scholarships rather than one year financial packages while raising the bar for students in order to be accepted to the university.

She says these are all things that will lead the university into a better future.

"This reduces time for a degree, which in turn reduces student cost, increases student success and improves our competitiveness in the higher education marketplace," she said.

The university plans to add 15 additional programs to reach a bigger student population along with more online classes.
