Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day raises awareness

Posted: Updated:
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated was Tuesday to raise awareness and recognize those who have been affected by someone they know who died by suicide.

Laura Matlock of Cape Girardeau and founder of the AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk chapter in Cape Girardeau says she lost her brother nearly three years ago to suicide.

She created the walk every year to help raise awareness and help others in need.

She says suicide is a growing problem in this area, but thinks people are becoming more aware about it. She also feels it's necessary to share with others that there is help you can get.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, it is estimated that close to 1 million Americans attempt suicide and more that 38,000 die by suicide every year. That rounds out to one death every 13.7 minutes. Ninety percent of those who die by suicide had a diagnosable mental illness at the time of their death.

If you feel you need immediate help, please call the national suicide hotline at 1-800-273-TALK.

The 3rd Cape Girardeau chapter AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk on October 12 will be held at the Cape County Park North at noon For more information about this walk, visit www.outofthedarkness.org.
