TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Many Democrats are wondering what happened during the Tuesday primary election for Toledo mayor. Neither Democratic candidate finished in the top two.

Party Chairman Ron Rothenbuhler says it's a shock that no Democrat made it to the November general mayoral election.

Incumbent Mayor Mike Bell, an independent, came in first in the polls. In a political surprise, City Councilman Mike Collins, also an independent, came in a close second. Democrat Anita Lopez, who had heavy union backing, finished third, but is out of the race. The other top Dem, Councilman Joe McNamara, finished fourth.

Rothenbuhler says there will be a meeting Thursday with the party and several elected Democrats to go over what happened and determine where they go from here.

Democrat and City Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson says the party didn't get its message or voters out.

"You've got people not really focused enough on this election, and so that's where my concern is at," she said. "It's a need for us as a party to come together and do a review of what happened, what went wrong, what we could do to improve ourselves."

Hicks-Hudson says she is confident the party can right the ship.

Republican Party Chairman Jon Stanbrook says conservative and Republican-leaning areas of the city made the difference in the primary. He says the Republican Party hasn't decided whether or not they will endorse Bell or Collins.
