CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Text messages, phone calls, emails are all ways to stay connected through your cell phone. However, experts say too much time with this device can cause users to become dangerously dependent.

"Some individuals are actually addicted to their cell phones and if they're not somehow connected, it really stresses them out,” Dr. Sharon Braun said.

For many cell phone users, it’s something that’s difficult to put down.

“I have some friends who won't stop texting when we are out eating dinner,” Carmen Harris said.

“It has gone off probably five times in the last 30 minutes," Lavanna Radica said.

Braun says it’s important to realize how much time users are spending on their phones.

"Start asking yourself questions and even doing a timeline of how often you use the cell phone,” Braun said.

Braun suggests doing something that some people say would be nearly impossible.

"I would say to everybody for at least one day, set your cell phone aside completely," Braun said.

One user says it’s a connection that is very difficult to break.

"In the past, you wouldn't just drop everything to look at your message but I think it brings out the worse in a lot of people, including me,” Donald Stein said. "You're completely tied into them like an umbilical cord to another planet."

Braun says cell phone addiction can also cause sleep-loss and lead to social isolation.
