Suicide Prevention Week: How you can help

SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) -

It's something most people don't talk about, but there's an entire week to prevent it: suicide.

Bootheel Counseling Services wants to educate people on what they can do to prevent suicide.

Executive Director Cheryl Jones said there are things to watch out for in friends and family, like if they begin to withdrawal from people, or start to give things away that were once special to them.

But Danita Bohnnan attempted suicide and has now learned how to cope with her stress.

She wants others to know there is help out there.

"Please if you feel you need to talk to someone, reach out, there's always help, there's always someone out there that cares," said Bohnnan.

"Let that person know that you care about them and that there's help that they can get," said Jones.

"Myself, I didn't even realize I was going to do it, so it's hard for me to look at someone and know you know, the people that talk about it, for sure you need to get them help, regardless if they say no i'm not going to do it I changed my mind," said Bohnnan.

If you, or someone you know needs help, you can call the crisis hotline at 1-800-356-5395.
