Victim punched, shot in the stomach early Friday in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Police are investigating an early morning shooting in Cape Girardeau.

According to Cape Girardeau police around 4:15 a.m. on Friday, officers responded to the 400 block of south Sprigg Street where a victim had a bullet wound to his upper abdomen.

The victim told officers that he had been walking on William near Benton Street, when someone approached and demanded money. The victim says the suspect punched him in the face and then shot him.

Police say the victim doesn't recall anything for the next several minutes. The victim was taken to a hospital. There are no other details available at this time regarding his injuries.

The suspect is described as a black male. 

Currently, no one is in custody, but the investigation is ongoing.
