(RNN) – Tropical Storm Ingrid has formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico, right off the Mexican coast, the ninth tropical storm of the season.

The storm is about 60 miles east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico and moving westward at 2 mph. About 10 to 15 inches are expected to fall over eastern Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center. Some areas might see 25 inches of rain, especially in the mountains.

Tropical Storm Ingrid should strengthen over the next 48 hours and the eye of the storm is expected to make landfall sometime Sunday.

Ingrid is the third late-season storm currently in the Atlantic. Humberto was a Category 1 hurricane, but was downgraded Thursday to a tropical storm with sustained winds of 65 mph. Humberto is expected to churn away in the Atlantic.

Humberto was the first hurricane of the season and formed just hours shy of setting a record for the latest-forming hurricane in the Atlantic in a given year. Hurricane Gustav holds the record, developing on Sept. 11, 2002 at 8 a.m. Humberto missed the record by three hours.

Tropical Depression Gabrielle is slowly making its way toward Nova Scotia with winds of 35 mph.
