CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Teachers first discovered mold at Clippard Elementary School when they were getting their rooms ready for the school year more than a month ago. At the time, school officials told Heartland News it was surface mold and had been taken care of. However, staff members at the school say they found mold as recently as last week.

Assistant Superintendent Neil Glass says the school has been tested for mold and it is all clear.

"Our most recent test came back last week and it came back negative," Glass said. "We've not seen any signs of that since we remedied the situation."

On Thursday, school officials brought in ten commercial-sized dehumidifiers to help lower moisture levels.

"The problem was that we had such a high humidity level that the older units just weren't designed to take on that kind of humidity," Glass said.

Experts say high levels of humidity can be harmful.

"The higher levels of humidity in a building will create a situation where you promote mold and mildew growth. That's not good," said Virgil Jones, owner of ServiceMaster Clean.

Parents spoke out on our Facebook page saying their children have been coughing and sneezing more since they've been back at school at Clippard. Glass says the illness is unrelated.

"Air quality tests show that it's not because of a mold issue," Glass said.

School officials say the problem is under control.

"The dehumidifiers were a short term fix, our H-VAC technicians are looking at a long-term fix," Glass said.

Glass says the new systems will need to be replaced before next summer. He says he doesn't expect the cost of the system to be too significant.
