MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

It's the welcome home every soldier hopes for. The Patriot Guard in place and a loved one waiting with hopeful anticipation.

While it had all the trappings of a picturesque homecoming, Army Specialist Aaron Cass' mission wasn't quite complete. He had unfinished business with Army Sergeant Amy Ryan. She was finishing her last tour in Iraq when he was deployed to Afghanistan.

"I have something for you," Cass said.

"What you are doing?" his girlfriend asked.

Cass explained that he was proposing and asked his soon-to-be bride not to cry.

With the happy tears, the couple has something new to plan, this time, together on American soil.

"Did you have any expectation?" Cass asked. "I had been planning this since February."

The couple met while they were stationed at an Army base El Paso, Texas. Cass' return marks the end of both their Army careers.

"We are going on a cruise in October to celebrate us both getting out of the Army,"

Among the hustle and bustle of baggage claims, time stood still for the newly-engaged couple.

"If you are going to be married to me, you can't carry my stuff..."

The couple is picking up where they left off with no intention of ever traveling alone again.
