MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A new report shows Alabama is making progress in reducing the number of patients getting infections while in the hospital. The Department of Public Health found hospitals in the state performed above the national average in four key categories.

"We have increased our surveillance of hand hygiene which is the most important thing you can do to prevent infections," said Patty Miller, Infection Prevention Coordinator at Baptist Medical Center South. "We have standardized practices and protocols."

In the latest report, hospitals like Baptist South, Baptist East and Jackson Hospital all performed at or better than the national performance.

"I think if you've got the right interventions, you know what you need to do, you've got the right resources and you train your staff well, many of this can be prevented, or at least the spread of them can be prevented," said Rosemary Blackmon, Chief Operating Officer of the Alabama Hospital Association.

Blackmon and others advise visitors to hospitals can do their part by avoiding hospitals when they're sick, and washing hands when they leave patient rooms or the hospital itself.
