AL Supreme Court blocks Accountability Act lawsuit

The Alabama Supreme Court Friday blocked a lawsuit that was challenging the state's controversial new education law, known as the Alabama Accountability Act.

In the suit, the Alabama Education Association said that the Legislature violated the state's Open Meetings law when Republicans passed the legislation.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court said the Alabama Constitution of 1901 does not require the legislature to meet in public.

While the high court's ruling deals a setback to the state's most powerful teachers union, there are other challenges to the Accountability Act.

Currently, two other lawsuits are pending against the law.

The AAA gives tax credits to families for leaving what are deemed "failing" schools and will allow those families to move their children to non-failing schools.
