MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A government shutdown could have reverberating effects in Alabama if Congress doesn't act.

There are more than 43,000 federal government employees in Alabama according to the most recent Census.

Many of them work at the 14 federal buildings and 22 Social Security Administration offices around the state.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told reporters at a jobs announcement that he's opposed to a government shut down as an effort to stop the federal healthcare law.

"The Affordable Care Act won't work" Gov. Bentley said. "If it goes into effect then it will crumble."

The Governor urged lawmakers to strike a spending deal by the beginning of the week to let the Affordable Care Act go into effect, so then it will be realized as disaster, causing Congress to make changes before most provisions go into effect January 1, 2014.

October 1 is when the current Continuing Resolution that's funding the government expires, and when federal healthcare exchanges, also known as marketplaces, are set to go online nationwide which is one of the key parts of the president's signature law.

Alabama's governor said it's wrong to hold other programs hostage in order to stop Obamacare.

Gov. Bentley said, "The worst thing I think we can do right now is shut the federal government down is hurt people getting their checks, especially retired people, people on social security, things of this nature. I just don't think that's a wise idea. I'm not for that."

Alabama also has seven military installations with more than 11,000 active military who could have their paychecks halted if House Republicans and Senate Democrats can't reach an agreement.
