The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals and former Southern Illinois Miners Pitcher Tanner Roark 4-3 Monday night. Carlos Beltran homered and Adam Wainwright earned his 18th win as the Cardinals eliminated the Nationals from playoff contention. With the victory, St. Louis lowered it's magic number to clinch the NL Central title to four and maintained it's two game lead over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. With the Nats loss, both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati locked up playoff berths combined with their wins. The Cardinals secured at least a wild card on Sunday.
