(KFVS) -

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has announced new Illinois health plans that will begin October 1.

The plans offered through the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace, an online place where consumers can compare all health insurance plans offered, will be in categories based on price.

Those who are currently uninsured can pick a health insurance plan through the marketplace.

Bronze will be the lowest cost while silver, gold and platinum will have the highest cost.

According to a press release from the governor's office, the rates for the benchmark plans that will be offered on the Marketplace are more than 25 percent below U.S. Health and Human Services estimates.

A six-month enrollment period for the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace will start in October and will close April 1.

For coverage to start January 1, customers need to enroll by December 15.

About 1.8 million Illinois residents are uninsured. Many of them will qualify for free health coverage under an expanded Medicaid program. Others with low or moderate household incomes will be eligible for tax credits that will drop their costs lower than the rates announced Tuesday.

The press release also states the plans announced would give residents in all 102 Illinois counties access to at least 34 plans in addition to another 28 plans offered by employers.

Starting October 1, residents of Illinois can access the Marketplace in three ways:

  • online
  • the state's help desk
  • visiting a partner organization

More information is expected to be released later this week.
