TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) -

It's bulky and not very comfortable but it can sure go a long way in saving a life.

Tuesday, the Alabama chapter of the American Moose Organization along with the Safe Surfin' Foundation delivered an entire package of new Kevlar vests to the Macon County Sheriff's Department.

The Moose organization was founded in 1888 in Louisville, Kentucky, and it's primarily a civic group. The organization chose the Macon County Sheriff's Department after learning the department was in desperate need of new vests.

Nine were delivered Tuesday and nine more are on the way, all free of charge to the sheriff's office.

"Everyday 200,000 law enforcement officials in this country go to work without vests," said Ron Porter, Research Director for Safe Surfin's in Bedford County, Virginia.

Macon County Sheriff David Warren knows all too well what a difference one of these vests can make.

"Several years ago I was hit by small caliber. If I hadn't had one on there's no telling what might've happened," said Warren.

"These vests are rated 3 A meaning they will stop ballistics up to .45 caliber rounds," said Porter.

Sheriff Warren says the new vests couldn't have come at a better time considering Victoryland is no longer a major player in Macon County due to recent court battles over gambling.

"When Victoryland closed that represented $6 million a year for the county," Warren said.

The free vests are worth more than $10,000.

The sheriff says the old vests they have are outdated. With the new ones Macon County deputies say they will feel more confident and more secure in an increasingly violent world.
