Sheriff: No charges in Butler Co. School Board meeting 'threat'

GREENVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden is reacting to news that a portion of the county school board's agenda was changed Tuesday due to what was deemed a threat of violence.

The controversy started after Superintendent Darren Douthitt's contract was placed on the Board's agenda for discussion for Tuesday night's packed meeting.

According to the sheriff, the threat came from a resident who called the superintendent and said that if the situation regarding his contract did not go the way they wanted it to, there would be some problems.

The contract discussion was subsequently removed from the agenda.

Sheriff Harden said the person who made the statement was not intending for it to be a threat and will not face any charges. Sheriff Harden said what was being said on the street and what was actually said were two different things.

"We're afraid somebody is going to get hurt here," said School Board President Mickey Jones to the crowd that was gathered. "We're afraid those two students right there who are supposed to give the pledge will get hurt because somebody in this meeting can't control their temper."

Jones said Superintendent Douthitt's contract would not be brought up at the meeting and that it will be re-added to the agenda at some future date. Jones said the contract will or will not be renewed on the Board's own time table. A date has not been set.

Jones asked the community for unity. Superintendent Douthitt did not want to speak regarding the controversy.
