MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Bethany Baldwin is learning all sorts of things at the MacMillan International Academy in Montgomery. One lesson Bethany is taking a step to fulfill is a plan she's putting in place to help the needy.

"I know there are people in Alabama who don't have hardly anything," said Bethany.

Bethany will turn 10 on October 1. Instead of gifts and money, the youngster wants friends to bring bottles of water and food. The actual party is Saturday, October 5th at Old Alabama Town in Montgomery.

"This will go to the Salvation Army," she said.

This giving spirit even surprised her mom.

"She told me I have enough toys and everything and I thought 'wow,' said Bethany's mom Emmi Baldwin.

"It started with a 3-minute video about the basic needs and they started asking questions. Bethany is the only one who took action," said teacher Felicia Mills.

It was just a few days ago when Bethany learned a hard truth; so many people in the world don't have the basic needs many of us take for granted. The 9-year old says she's learning to see beyond herself.. her family and her community.

"They're struggling with food and I want to help," she said.

A birthday to remember by putting others first.
