Dothan bomb squad honored by FBI

Instead of running away from a crisis, bomb technicians run towards the danger.

On Sept. 25 the Dothan bomb squad was recognized and honored by the FBI for its work during the Midland City, Ala. hostage situation where a little boy was held captive.

The situation began in late January when Jimmy Lee Dykes boarded a school bus and fatally shot the driver. He then took a 5-year-old named Ethan and held him captive in an underground bunker for a week. FBI agents were able to kill Dykes and rescue the little boy.

The Dothan bomb squad were the first bomb squad on the scene. Once Ethan was rescued, they also searched for more bombs and made sure the entire area was secure.

"When they hear the word bomb, most of them want to go to it in order to make things safer for all of us, and certainly they are more at risk than the rest of us," says Special Agent Steve Richardson of the FBI Mobile Division.

Each member of the squad was given a commemorative coin with the U-S-S Alabama pictured on it.
