MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is reporting a deputy was assaulted Friday morning at the McCracken County Regional Jail.

According to the sheriff's department, the assault happened around 8:15 a.m.

They say a deputy was bringing an arrestee into the jail and saw a different, unruly inmate that was fighting with deputy jailers. Several deputy jailers were trying to control 33-year-old Robert A. Powell after he intentionally flooded his cell and other areas of the jail.

The sheriff's department said the deputy was trying to help the jailers as they were having trouble bringing the inmate under control. Powell bit the deputy on the arm, breaking the skin. She was taken to the emergency room for treatment.

After biting the deputy, the sheriff's department said Powell was brought under control with a taser.

Powell is currently serving a 320 day sentence for first degree criminal trespass. He was charged Friday with third degree assault.
