SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

More than 400 University of Massachusetts students made a difference throughout Western Mass on Saturday, assisting local communities in various ways as part of their Mass Impact Day of Service.

Nearly 50 of those students were in Springfield, helping out at Gardening the Community on Hancock Street.

The students helped by harvesting and planting seeds, as well as weeding and cleaning up the site.

Gardening the Community organizers told CBS 3 that it meant a lot to have the students help out.

"UMass is such a resource for us in Springfield and for our young people," said Program Director Anne Richmond. "It's great to develop those relationships. It energizes us. It's really nice community building."

Along with the site in the city, the students taking part in the day of service helped out at the Hop Brook Conservation Area in Amherst and the Connecticut River Watershed in Hadley.
