Marquand school unveils new 'safe house'

MARQUAND, MO (KFVS) -

Marquand High School has a new safe house

The school in Madison County got a FEMA grant to pay for the structure. It was built to withstand an EF-5 tornado.

The concrete building has a heating and ventilation system that can run for two hours on a generator.

Principal Scott Blake says it's a structure the community desperately needed.

"We needed the room for the school, and safety for the students during the day, but also the community itself," said Blake. "They've had some severe storms come through the community and there's been quite a bit of damage in past 30, 40 years and they were needing a place to go to be secure."

The school still needs to raise about $38,000 for the project.

It doubles as a gym so the money they're raising will go toward bleachers and a scoreboard.
