MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The body of the man who shot two TACT officers was found in bathtub of a burned house, which he barricaded himself in for hours Tuesday.

A standoff situation started when officers arrived at the house at 1383 Worthington Street with an arrest warrant early in the afternoon for Aaron Dumas, 32, who was wanted for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend and her brother.

When police attempted to execute the warrant for Dumas he shot TACT officer Timothy Jackson, 26. Jackson was taken to The MED with a leg injury; he has since been released in stable condition.

Officers returned fire, and Dumas ran back into the house. The TACT Unit attempted to negotiate the suspect's surrender, but the suspect refused.

Dumas later shot second TACT officer, Paul Hutchison, 34, through a window shortly before 5 p.m. The 15-year veteran of the police department was rushed to The MED. He was released from the hospital Tuesday evening.

"We are grateful and feel blessed that both of them, it appear at this time, will survive their injuries," said Memphis Police Department Director Toney Armstrong.

Shortly after the police shootings, the house on Worthington Street was engulfed in flames. Fire crews were initially asked to stand back because the scene was not safe, but they were eventually allowed to the house to fight the flames.

Investigators found Dumas dead inside the house.

Many neighbors were told to evacuate nearby streets as the standoff began. Police continued to block Worthington Street Tuesday night as fire investigators combed through the burned house.

Neighbors who knew Dumas said he always packed a Bible and a gun.

He reportedly shot Angelique White, 29, and her brother, Christopher, 23, in their mother's driveway on October 7. The siblings are still being treated at The MED for their injuries.

Action News 5 spoke with the victims' mother, who witnessed the shooting of her children. She said her family has been worried about something like this happening for years.

"It's been something I had envisioned ... Had dreams about [it for] three and a half years, said Bonita White.

An autopsy will determine how Aaron Dumas died, and fire investigators will figure out exactly how the fire started. His criminal history includes at least one arson arrest.
