Injured puppy left abandoned in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A local adoption center is looking for answers after a 2-week-old puppy was found injured and abandoned in Springfield.

An animal control officer found the puppy outside of the Thomas J. O'Connor Adoption Center.

Now they're working to give her a second chance at life.

Rio is a three-pound Chihuahua pup.

She was left abandoned in a carrier on the doorstep of the adoption center.

When Rio was found, she was suffering from injuries to her legs.

"We did confirm both her legs are broken, fractured her front legs," said Pam Peebles, the director at the center.

She said whoever previously owned Rio taped tongue depressors as splints to her front legs in what seems to be an at-home procedure.

But because it wasn't done properly by a vet, it only caused more problems for Rio.

"All underlying areas of her legs basically were dying, the skin were dying off and were seriously infected," said Peebles.

Because of the severity of Rio's injuries, vets at T. J. O'Connor said it could be some time before she's back up on her feet.

"She's on heavy-duty pain medicine and she's been X-rayed and then we're keeping her comfortable until we determine what the best plan for her is, so it's pretty complex," said Peebles.

Peebles said under Massachusetts laws, what happened to Rio is considered animal cruelty and comes with a penalty.

"Denying an animal from vet care to reduce or relieve suffering is a felony," said Peebles.

She encourages those who can't take care of their pets to bring them to a nearby veterinary center.

"We know the economy's bad, we know veterinary care could be expensive, but doing nothing is not an option," said Peebles.

Once little Rio has received proper medical attention, she will be put up for adoption to hopefully go home to a loving family.

"She has become a real little cuddle bug. She wants to be in our arms in our laps constantly so I think she is the Chihuahua lap dog," said Peebles.

Rio should be back on her feet in the next couple of weeks.

If you are interested in adopting her, you can contact the T. J. O'Connor Adoption Center at 413-781-1484.
