Deputies: Former school employee posed as girl to get pictures of boys

CABARRUS COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Detectives have arrested a former school maintenance worker on sex offense charges involving underage boys, according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office.

Michael Wayne Osborne, 40, of Concord, was arrested Friday by detectives and charged with felony of indecent liberties with a child.

Deputies say Osborne was identified after an investigation revealed that he was posing as a 14-year-old girl on Facebook, and soliciting nude photographs of teenage boys.

Neighbors like Terry Mauney described Michael Osborne as a good kid who lived in a Cabarrus County subdivision with mother.

"Michael played baseball for me, when he was a kid. I've known Michael all his life for the most part," Mauney said.

So far, seven minor children have been identified as victims in the case. Those victims, deputies say, are from Cabarrus and Cumberland Counties in North Carolina, as well as the state of Illinois.

Folks who live down the block like Candice Burris say he and his family were not very social.

She's now concerned about the safety of her daughter.

Burris said, "It puts an extra level of paranoia, and makes you want to be overly protective if you're not careful."

Osborne was employed as a grounds maintenance worker by Cabarrus County Schools, and coached many athletic teams for middle schools throughout Cabarrus County.

He was suspended by the school system prior to his arrest, and the Sheriff's Office is currently working with school authorities in order to identify all potential victims in the case.

Osborne is currently in the Cabarrus County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, and has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

If you have any information about this case, please contact Detective Brian Schmitt at (704)920-3136.
