LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster outside of a Las Vegas Strip resort, police confirmed Monday.

A spokesperson with Las Vegas Metro police said they were called just before 1 p.m. to the Planet Hollywood hotel-casino after a worker reported finding the infant.

The child's body was discovered by workers who were sorting recyclables.

Officers arrived and confirmed a newborn was in the trash receptacle.

While police have not confirmed the child was abandoned, they certainly suspect that is the case.

"Young women, young couples, whoever finds themselves in this situation have got to know there are so many more options than this one," said Metro's Capt. Robert DuVall.

Police have investigated plenty of crimes like this before.

"Whether it was walked in or from one of the other hotel rooms or something like that, honestly, we don't know just yet," DuVall said. "We don't know if this baby was born alive or dead."

Police haven't determined the sex of the child. They said much will come to light upon investigation.

"Once we move the body, that could be when the real work begins – all the small trace evidence that has to be gathered," DuVall said.

Police said people need to know that Nevada's Safe Haven Infant Protection Act is in effect and that the child's life did not need to end like this.

"There [are] no questions asked if you want to take babies to hospitals, to a local fire department. My goodness, there are even some convenience stores that you can take these babies to if they're unwanted," said Duvall.

Police said they plan to review surveillance video of the area and are working closely with hotel security to determine who might have placed the baby in the dumpster.
