JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Jackson County Board met on Tuesday evening to discuss what to do with the county's nursing home.

Several employees and residents family members were on hand for the meeting after hearing that the county was considering shutting down Jackson County Rehab and Care Center.

The director of the center Merle Taylor, says it's getting tougher by the day to keep things going.

"It just gets harder and harder with all the negative publicity," Merle Taylor  said. "It causes staff to fear what is going to happen to their futures. So they leave for other positions at other locations."

The county sold the center to a private investor in September of last year. The county board made the move after having to dip into other county departments funds, and most recently authorizing additional subsidized funding.

The private owner won't have a new building built for another year.

Now the county board must decide how to keep the facility open and pay the bills on it, as they estimate another million dollar deficit on the center for 2014.

The board thought they were no longer responsible for it, but now they will be responsible for the nursing home building for another year.

"I personally don't want to saddle the county with $750,000-dollars in debt," Jackson County Board Chairman John Rendleman said. "But there seemed to be a majority of board members that we're interested in borrowing the money. I would like to scour the budget a little more carefully, and perhaps use some of the funds we've accumulated elsewhere."

The county board must figure things out with the rehab and care center, they have to post the fiscal budget for the county by the middle of November.
